The themes of care and repair are connecting threads running through many works in Slingshot: 2024 MFA in Visual Art Thesis Exhibition. The act of mending extends the life of garments, but when fostered in “stitching circles,” it also strengthens the fabric of our community. This hands-on workshop led by artist and MFA ’24 graduate Lynne Smith will offer a space for making as well as a time for connection and restoration. Workshop participants can bring an item of clothing in need of repair, embellish an existing garment, or make a decorative fabric patch with embroidered stitches to take home. 

Free and open to the public. Recommended for ages 13 and up. Registration is required.

“Mend: Introduction to Visible Mending” is the first in a two-part series of workshops, “Mesh & Mend.” The second workshop, “Mesh: Introduction to Weaving on a Cardboard Loom,” will be held on June 29. Visitors are welcome to register for either or both workshops in the series. 

About the Facilitator

Lynne Smith is an artist, designer, and educator. Her work spans fiber, sculpture, and installation. She uses humble, often reclaimed materials to express the beauty and precarity of our entanglements and the resilience of the human spirit. She will be receiving her MFA in Visual Art at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts in 2024.
