Since the early 1990s Andrea Zittel has combined art, architecture, and design to examine how we address basic human needs such as shelter and clothing. Parallel Planar Panel exemplifies her longstanding investigation into the panel—a multifunctional form that comprises a basic element of our domestic and urban environments. Consisting of a woven wool textile and a rectangular plane of powder-coated aluminum, the work can exist as a three-dimensional partition or as a two-dimensional abstraction when the textile is hung flat on the wall. The textile is woven with an abstract pattern alluding to both Bauhaus and Constructivist design aesthetics as well as to Zittel’s own object-based installations that reflect on issues of context and how we experience space and things in the physical world.
