Colombian visual artist Carolina Caycedo discusses her sculpture inspired by the “three sisters” plant cultivation technology—an Indigenous practice used across the Americas of planting squash, maize, and beans together as a system of mutual support.

Addressing each of the seeds as “sister” establishes them as kin to each other and to us. The names suggest a female genealogy, homing in on the fact that gardening and seed keeping was traditionally the work of women and seen as vital to preserving life.

This artwork is on view in Seeds: Containers of a World to Come through July 28, 2025.
