Artist's Pick Film Series: Space Is the Place

December 4, 2013
Tivoli Theatre, 6350 Delmar Blvd.

This film series is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Rashid Johnson: Message to Our Folks, a survey spanning the last fourteen years of the artist's career and including more than 30 of his artworks. The three independent films were selected by Rashid Johnson himself, variously informing his artistic practice, his exploration of themes of race and identity, and his interest in Afrofuturism.

Join us for the second of three nights of the series, featuring a screening of Space Is the Place (1974), written by Sun Ra and Joshua Smith, and directed by John Coney.

In this science fiction film starring jazz musician Sun Ra and his "Arkestra" as themselves, Sun Ra returns to earth after years of space travel and decides to establish a settlement of African Americans in outer space, using music as the medium of transport.
