Enhance your experience of Seeds: Containers of a World to Come with a special behind-the-scenes tour of Shaw Nature Reserve, a division of the Missouri Botanical Garden. Celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2025, Shaw Nature Reserve is a haven for plants and wildlife, as well as a national leader for ecological restoration, native plant horticulture, and environmental education.

Kemper Art Museum members will tour the Nature Reserve’s Seed Bank and the newly completed Linnemeyer Russell Restoration Center with Seed Bank Manager Meg Engelhardt and Restoration and Land Stewardship Manager Mike Saxton. After the tour, attendees are welcome to spend the day exploring the Nature Reserve.

An hour-long tour is at 9 am.

Missouri Botanical Garden Seed Bank at Shaw Nature Reserve

Seed banking is an essential conservation tool that enables long-term storage of genetic diversity for large numbers of plant species. Established in 2012, the Seed Bank at Shaw Nature Reserve houses more than 2,400 collections representing 1,152 species, 196 of which are globally rare or threatened with extinction.

Linnemeyer Russell Restoration Center at Shaw Nature Reserve

Completed in 2024, the Linnemeyer Russell Restoration Center advances the Nature Reserve’s leadership in the field of ecological restoration by providing dedicated space for the specialized tools and equipment needed to conduct large-scale ecological restoration. Attendees will have the opportunity to view the drying and processing equipment used for seed collecting and to hear about the Nature Reserve’s holistic land stewardship efforts.
