Join us for a live online conversation about renowned artist Marcel Duchamp’s experiments with kinetic and optical art and his foundational role in the emergence of the multiple in the mid-20th century.

Ideas of reproduction, transformation, and wide distribution were central to Duchamp’s artistic practice. Focusing on some of his key artworks, including the readymades, the Rotoreliefs, and the Boîte-en-valise, this discussion examines Duchamp’s embrace of replication as a pointed means to rethink the work of art while undercutting accepted notions of originality and authenticity.

Alexander Kauffman, Andrew W. Mellon–Anne d’Harnoncourt Postdoctoral Curatorial Fellow at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, speaks with Meredith Malone, associate curator at the Kemper Art Museum, in this discussion held in conjunction with the exhibition Multiplied: Edition MAT and the Transformable Work of Art, 1959–1965.
