Hugh Yorty earned a BFA at Kent State University in 1965. Two years later, he completed MA and MFA degrees at the University of Iowa. Today he teaches at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield.

Yorty's realist still life paintings have been included in many exhibitions, such as the Big Ten Traveling Exhibition of 1966, and are in the collections of several museums, including the Springfield Art Museum in Missouri.
