Associate Curator

The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum has an opening for an Associate Curator. Primary responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to research, exhibition, interpretation, publication, and development of the Museum's permanent collection. The successful candidate will also pursue active relationships within the national and international community of scholars, artists, and their representatives. The 2006 opening of the Kemper Art Museum's new building has enhanced the Museum's capacity to actively shape programs designed to rethink the discipline of art history and its interpretations, to broaden disciplinary boundaries, and to reconsider the intellectual, historical, and social contexts within which we position the work of art. The Associate Curator of Collections is a senior staff position reporting to the Director and Chief Curator.

Administrative Coordinator

The Administrative Coordinator for the Kemper Art Museum reports to the Museum Director, provides administrative support to the Museum Director, and is responsible for coordinating all budgetary and human resources functions for the Museum, as well as the day to day office operations.

Summer Internship Program

Gallery Teaching
(late May through July 2008)

The Education Department of the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum is accepting applications for Summer Internships in Gallery Teaching. These volunteer internship positions are designed for students in art or art history with a special interest in museum education and teaching. Requirements include weekly meetings for discussion and analysis of theories of teaching, researching and learning about works of art in the Museum’s permanent collection, attendance at monthly Spotlight Series gallery talks, and visits to selected arts institutions in the St. Louis area.

Marketing and Promotions
(late May through July 2008)

The Marketing department at the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum is accepting applications for a Marketing and Promotions Intern. This volunteer internship position is designed to give any current student with an interest in arts marketing and museum public relations and promotions an insider's look at the day-to-day operations of promotions and marketing. From May through July the intern will assist with the implementation of direct mail and other marketing initiatives, learn about community-building activities online, learn about publicity and PR aspects of the department, and attend a meeting of St. Louis arts marketing professionals.

Student Employment

The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum employs over fifty students during the school year in a variety of positions. The student work force is integral to the success of the Museum, and in turn provides students opportunities to gain experience in and an understanding of the day-to-day operations of a museum. Generally, Federal Work Study -eligible students are given preference for paid positions. Contact kemperartmuseum@wustl.edu for more information or to express interest in an open position.

Museum Attendant

Kemper Museum Attendants make up the majority of the student workforce at the Kemper Art Museum, working in the galleries to provide security for the Museum's permanent and temporary exhibitions. Additionally, Museum Attendants are called upon to convey information about current and upcoming exhibitions and events, as well as general visitor information. Successful candidates will be team-oriented, courteous, punctual, and dependable, and must adhere to the standard of professionalism and customer service at the Museum. Position reports to Security Supervisor. Students with a flexible schedule and a willingness to work evening and weekend hours are preferred.

Marketing and Communications Assistant

The Marketing and Communications Assistant provides general administrative assistance related to marketing, events, and membership. Successful candidates will be creative, reliable, detail-oriented, computer literate, and able to work variable hours including some evenings. A background or interest in art, marketing, and/or communications is helpful. Position reports to the Communications and Events Coordinator. Hours will accommodate student schedules.

Rights and Reproductions Assistant

The Rights and Reproductions Assistant oversees requests to reproduce artwork in the Museum's permanent collection. Duties include drafting correspondence, record-keeping, digital imaging, and assisting with other administrative tasks as needed. Successful candidates will be detail-oriented and computer literate. A background in art history is helpful. Position reports to Associate Registrar. This position requires approximately ten hours weekly, to be scheduled M-F, between 9 am and 5 pm, and will accommodate student schedules.

Registrar's Assistant

Registrar's Assistants provide general support on projects related to collections management, including data entry, assistance with basic artist/object research, digital imaging, cataloguing, and other administrative tasks. Successful candidates will be detail-oriented, accurate, and computer literate. A background in art history is helpful. Position reports to the Chief Registrar and Associate Registrar. Hours will be scheduled M-F, between 9 am and 5 pm, and will accommodate student schedules.

Visitor Services Assistant

Visitor Services Assistants work directly with the public to answer questions and address visitor concerns, as well as run the Museum's small gift shop and assist with some basic external communications. A cheerful demeanor and helpful attitude are required along with the ability to convey information on current and upcoming exhibitions and events. Retail and/or customer service experience is a plus. May also be required to assist with shop inventory and maintenance, and/or special events. Students must be reliable, trustworthy, and responsible. A willingness to work evening and weekend hours is preferred. Position reports to Communications and Events Coordinator.

Facilities/Preparator Assistant

Facilities/Preparator Assistants aid in exhibition design/installation, art handling, and building maintenance. Additionally, Facilities Assistants construct, paint, and repair objects, and perform other duties as assigned. Successful candidates will show initiative and independence, will be reliable, detail-oriented and computer literate, and have the ability to work with minimal supervision. Position reports to Facilities Manager. Hours are scheduled M-F, between 9 am and 5 pm, and will accommodate student schedules.
